Is Your Call To Action Missing This Surprising Signal?

Picture two people opening the same email from you this morning. One of them has been reading what you send for months, and trusts you enough to click almost anything you put in front of them. The other only found you yesterday, is still deciding whether you are worth their time, and is nowhere near ready to buy anything from anyone yet.

You send them both the exact same call to action, worded the exact same way, and later you wonder why only one of them clicked.

I have watched this happen inside my own list more times than I would like to admit, and I know a good few of you reading this will recognise the feeling too. You are trying to build something that finally lets you stop feeling like you are working for the tax man every single week, and it is easy to think the fix is a bolder button or a cleverer line. It generally is not. The real fix is understanding where the person reading your email truly stands, and asking for the right thing at the right moment.

Three Kinds Of Reader On Your List

Every subscriber sitting on your list right now falls into roughly one of three places, whether you have ever thought about it or not.

Some of them have just noticed that the wages are not stretching far enough, that the bills keep going up and the pay does not, and they are only just starting to wonder whether there is another way. They have no plan yet. They do not need a bold call to action from you. They need something honest that tells them somebody else understands what they are carrying.

Some of them are further along. They are actively comparing what is out there, reading reviews, weighing up your emails against two other people’s, and quietly asking themselves whether you can really be trusted with their time and their money.

And some of them have already decided. They know this is what they want to try. They are simply waiting for one honest reason to act today rather than putting it off until next month.

Where Most Of Us Get This Wrong

Here is the mistake I made for years without even noticing I was making it. I sent the same urgent, act-now kind of message to everybody on the list, regardless of where they actually stood.

The real fix is understanding where the person reading your email truly stands, and asking for the right thing at the right moment.

Push a countdown clock at somebody who only just noticed their situation, and it does not create urgency. It creates suspicion. They do not know you well enough yet to believe the clock is even real.

And send a gentle, learn more sort of message to somebody who has already decided, and you waste the one moment they were finally ready to say yes.

What Changed The Day I Finally Said Yes

On 19th July 2025, after well over ten years of trying different courses, different software and different mentors, I got an email telling me I had earned $23.50 in commission through Six Figure Success, an affiliate program run by Nick James. It does not sound like much written down like that.

But when I checked my account and saw the money was actually there, something in me shifted. It felt like a stone had been rolled off my shoulder.

What I have come to understand since is that I was not persuaded by anything clever in that moment. I was simply, finally, in the place where I was ready to believe it could work, and the message that reached me matched exactly where I was standing. It did not need to shout at me. It just needed to be true, and to land at the right time.

Individual results vary, and this is one personal commission rather than a promise of what anybody else will earn. But the lesson underneath it applies to every single person on your own list right now, whatever stage they happen to be at.

Matching Your Own Message To Where They Stand

You do not need to rebuild your whole email sequence this week to put this to use. Start by reading your last few emails as if you were the stranger who only found you yesterday, and then read them again as if you were the subscriber who has been with you for six months.

Notice where the two of them would feel differently. That gap is generally where your call to action is missing the mark.

I have written a bit more about matching what you send to who is actually reading it in other articles I have shared recently, and it is worth a look if this is new territory for you.

I have also been building my own email list through eShowcase, and one of the things it has taught me is how differently a brand new subscriber and a long standing one respond to the exact same email.

A Simple Way To Check Your Own Emails Today

Pick one email you send regularly and ask three plain questions about it.

Is this going to somebody who just noticed a problem, somebody who is comparing their options, or somebody who has already decided? What does that specific person really need to hear right now, not the version of them you wish was reading it? And is the call to action asking for something that matches where they truly stand, or is it asking for a decision they are not ready to make yet?

Get that one match right, and you do not need a louder button or a bigger discount. You need the right words, going to the right reader, at the moment they are truly ready for them.

Some of your subscribers are not ignoring you because your offer is wrong. They are ignoring you because you are asking them for the wrong thing at the wrong time, and nobody enjoys being asked for something they are not ready to give.

Going Further With Your Own Writing

If you want to go further with this, Nick James has put together One Letter From Retirement, which walks through how one well written piece of persuasive writing can be built to match a reader properly rather than shouting the same thing at everybody.

It is not about tricks or pressure. It is about learning to write the kind of message that meets somebody exactly where they are, so that when they are finally ready, saying yes feels easy rather than forced.

If that sounds like the missing piece in your own emails, it may be worth a look.

To Finish

You do not need to write to everybody the same way, and you were never meant to. Some of your readers just need to feel understood. Some need proof. And some just need one honest reason to act today.

Get to know which is which, and the rest of your writing becomes a great deal easier.

To your success.
