The Overlooked Way To Build An Audience From Zero

What do you do when you can’t make ends meet, and you haven’t even started building an audience yet?

That question sat with me for years. For well over ten years I tried course after course, software after software, mentor after mentor. None of it got me any closer to an audience of my own, let alone any income from one.

Do you wonder how anyone gets from zero to a real audience worth building an income around? I want to show you the one idea that shifted things for me. It isn’t clever, and it isn’t fast.

You don’t need thousands of followers or a bulging list to start. You need one clear promise to one small group of people, and the nerve to publish it before it feels ready. That’s the whole idea, and it starts with exactly nothing, which is where most of us begin.

Stop Picking A Topic, Pick A Promise

Most people trying to build an audience start with a subject. Money. Marketing. Getting fit. That’s not really a strategy, it’s just a category, and categories don’t give anyone a reason to follow you specifically.

What works better is finishing this sentence: people should follow me because I consistently help them do one particular thing. Not everything. One thing.

For me, that might sound like helping people who feel like their wages are chicken feed find a realistic way to build something of their own. Not another course that promises the world and delivers a login page.

A promise beats a topic every time. Once you know what you’re promising, the rest of building an audience gets a lot less overwhelming.

What Nothing Really Looks Like

Zero followers. Zero list. Zero replies to anything you’ve ever posted. That’s not a failure. That’s simply where you start, and pretending otherwise is what keeps most people stuck planning instead of publishing.

I know that feeling of modern day slavery, working hard for wages that barely cover the month. I know what it’s like wondering whether anything you build in the evenings after work will ever amount to much.

But you’re not trying to shout louder than everyone else online. You’re trying to become useful to a small, specific group of people until they start looking for you on purpose.

That’s a much smaller job than it sounds, and it’s one you can begin today, whatever your day job is currently paying you.

The Email That Finally Proved It Was Real

On 19th July 2025, after more than ten years of trying different courses and methods, I got an email telling me I’d earned $23.50 in commission. It came through an affiliate program run by Nick James called Six Figure Success. It doesn’t sound like much written down.

But when I checked my account and saw the money was there, something in me shifted. It felt like a stone had been rolled off my shoulder. That single, small email was proof, not a promise, that building something of my own was possible for someone like me. Individual results vary, and this was a single personal commission, not a guaranteed outcome, but it was mine.

I bring that up here because it’s the same proof you’re looking for when you’re trying to build an audience from nothing. You’re not looking for a viral moment. You’re looking for one small, real signal that tells you this works, so you keep going long enough to find out.

If it happened once, for me, at $23.50, it can happen again. That’s the whole lesson I’ve carried from that day, and it applies just as much to a first subscriber as it does to a first commission.

Build The List Before You Build Anything Else

Whatever platform you choose to start on, don’t wait until you have a big following before you start collecting a list. I’ve written about this properly, in other articles I have shared recently, but the short version matters here.

Platforms lend you attention. A list gives you a direct line to people who already know you, one you don’t lose the moment an algorithm changes its mind about you.

I use eShowcase myself to manage my own list, and it’s one of the simplest ways I’ve found to keep that direct connection in one place rather than scattered across accounts I don’t control.

You don’t need a huge free resource to start either. Something small and specific, closely tied to the one promise you’ve made, will do far more than a giant guide nobody has time to read.

Let The Small Group Tell You What They Need

Your first handful of followers or subscribers aren’t a disappointing start. They’re your research department.

Ask them what they’re struggling with. Reply to the people who reply to you. Notice which one thing keeps coming up in their replies, because that’s usually your next piece of content, and eventually your next offer.

Most people never get this far. It isn’t because the idea is difficult, but because they’re still waiting to feel ready before they publish anything at all. Don’t wait. Start with the version you can manage this week, and let real people, not the plan in your head, tell you what to build next.

Where This Naturally Leads

Once you’ve got even a small list responding to you, the next honest question is what you do with it. Nick James put together a full system on exactly that, called Lazy Way To Email Riches. It walks through turning a young list into real, steady replies and sales rather than just names sitting quietly in an inbox.

It’s worth a look if you’ve followed the steps above and you’re at the point where you have a small list but aren’t yet sure how to talk to it in a way that gets a response. You can find it here: Lazy Way To Email Riches.

It won’t do the first part for you, the part where you decide your promise and publish anyway. That part is still yours.

But once you’ve got a handful of people who’ve chosen to hear from you, it’s a sensible next step for turning that small, real start into something steadier.

Wherever you are right now, whether that’s zero followers or a list of twelve people, you’re closer to a real audience than you think. Start with the promise. Publish before it feels ready. Let the first honest signal, however small, be the proof that keeps you going.

To your success.
